Spectroscopy of Low Surface Brightness Galaxies with the Hobby-eberly Telescope

چکیده
We have obtained low resolution spectra of nineteen red and blue low surface brightness galaxies, using the Marcario Low Resolution Spectrograph on the 9.2m Hobby-Eberly Telescope. These galaxies form a very heterogeneous class, whose spectra qualitatively resemble those of high surface brightness galaxies covering the full range of spectra seen in galaxies of Hubble types from E to Irr. We use a combination of emission line (EW(Hα), [N II]λ6584/Hα) and absorption line (Mgb, Hβ, ) based diagnostics to investigate the star-formation and chemical enrichment histories of these galaxies. These are diverse, with some galaxies having low metallicity and very young mean stellar ages, and other galaxies showing old, super-solar metallicity stellar populations. In contrast with some previous studies which found a strong trend of decreasing metallicity with decreasing central surface brightness, we find a population of galaxies with low surface brightness and near-solar metallicity. Correlations between several of the gas phase and stellar population age and metallicity indicators are used to place contraints on plausible evolutionary scenarios for LSB galaxies. The redshift range spanned by these galaxies is broad, with radial velocities from 3400 km/s to more than 65000 km/s. A subset of the sample galaxies have published H I redshifts and gas masses based on observations with the Arecibo 305m single-dish radio telescope, which place these galaxies far off of the mean Tully-Fisher relation. Our new optical redshifts do not agree with the published H I redshifts for these galaxies. Most of the discrepancies can be explained by beam confusion in the Arecibo observations, causing erroneous H I detections for some of the galaxies. Observations of Faint, Hard-band X-ray Sources in the Field of Crss J0030.5+2618 with the Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Hobby-eberly Telescope
We present results from a study of 2–8 keV X-ray sources detected by the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) instrument on the Chandra X-ray Observatory in the field of the z = 0.516 cluster CRSS J0030.5+2618. In our 63.5 arcmin2 search area, we detect 10 sources with 2–8 keV fluxes down to ≈ 4× 10−15 erg cm−2 s−1; our lowest flux sources are ≈ 10 times fainter than those previously availa...

A Tully-Fisher (TF) relation from Hα rotation curves of 19 luminous, star-forming galaxies reveals there is little evidence for evolution in the mass-to-light ratio (M/L) of these galaxies to z ∼ 0.3. The nearinfrared Tolman surface-brightness test for other luminous galaxies indicates their luminosity also is little changed to z ∼ 0.3. In this redshift regime, internal velocity – luminosity re...

We determined the relative spatial density of the Coma cluster galaxies selected by luminosity, and the contribution of the galaxies of each central brightness to the luminosity function (i.e. the luminosity function bi–variate in central brightness). The Coma cluster and control fields were imaged using the CFH12K (42 × 28 arcmin) and UH8K (28 × 28 arcmin) wide–field cameras at the Canada–Fran...
متن کاملEvaluation of New MOND Interpolating Function with Rotation Curves of Galaxies
The rotation curves of a sample of 46 low- and high-surface brightness galaxies are considered in the context of Milgrom's modi_ed dynamics (MOND) to test a new interpolating function proposed by Zhao et al. (2010) [1] and compare with the results of simple interpolating function. The predicted rotation curves are calculated from the total baryonic matter based on the B-band surface photometry,...

The 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET) is beginning science operations. It provides a unique approach to very large telescope development, with high performance at modest cost. The HET is already being cloned in the Southern hemisphere and may be the basis for the development of signi cantly larger telescopes for the new Millennium. We describe the current performance of the HET and of the newl...
